Technical and intriguing. Great read! This book would make a good movie. Lots of characters, good interaction and camaraderie between them. Very detailed, technical descriptions and diagrams of the subs making it easier to visualize.

Submarines, Explosions, Dark Organizations, and Technical Knowledge! What is not to love? What I really enjoyed about the novel was the introductions to characters in the initial portion of the novel, and detailed knowledge used and supplied by the author on the craft the protagonists would be piloting and the facility they staged out of. The build-up, in the middle third, with the protagonists slowly discovering the nefarious events occurring under their noses, and the moral dilemma of whether they were complicit, despite this lack of knowledge, to the deeds. This leads to the second interesting technique that was employed by the author, letting us as the reader see how and why the antagonists acted the way they did and how they set up the organization as they did. This creates a sense of schemes the protagonists are against, as it is not just some dark and murderous mustachioed twirling, dark suit in a throne-like chair petting the evilest of cats.

Technical but riveting novel. In this novel set in the late 1980s, a hidden, privately funded underwater facility uses an overhead offshore oil rig as its cover. Hiring secret, highly trained and highly paid crews (cohorts) for 5-year commitments, they operate small submarines to test cruise missiles as new technologies come on the market. In this imagining, both women and men inhabit the submarines, and love and sex are highly intertwined with the science and technology of manning a sub, something that in real life wouldn’t have happened in the 80s.
